i. The process leading to failure of metals under the repeated action of a cycle of stress. Failure depends upon the mean stress, the range of stress, and the number of cycles. If the stress is decreased, the material can withstand a greatly increased number of repetitions before failure. This is demonstrated by the typical fatigue curve in the illustration, usually called an
S-n curve. The length of time before failure is called the
fatigue life. See also
